Hampton Hockey Club Mourn the Loss of a Life Long Member

Karen was a lifelong member of Hampton in Arden Hockey Club and held a number of voluntary roles including Club Captain, Captain and Treasurer.

She started her career at Hampton in the 3rd XI in 1978 and took on the Captaincy after only one season. However, the next year she became a member of the 1st XI where she played every season bar one until 2007. During this time Karen also played for Warwickshire Juniors at U16 level and later for many years in the Warwickshire 2nd XI. She was also a member of the Midlands Lady Masters Team that won the inaugural Regional Lady Masters Tournament.

Karen was a prolific goalscorer and was known within the Club during her career as either "Bambi" as she would more often or not end up either under or on top of the goalkeeper in her pursuit of goals! or "Sniffer" for her ability to score a goal from nowhere.

Karen will be sadly missed, not only by the Hockey Club but within the village of Hampton where she was an active member of the community.

Our thoughts are with Karen’s family and friends at this sad time.

All Clubs MUST send a representative to that meeting [9th May 2012] or a fine WILL be imposed upon that club.

The main meeting will commence at 19.30.

There will be a separate meeting for the new Feeder clubs, commencing at 18.45.

Sad News - Sam Hurst

Sam was surrounded by her partner Lowena, family and close friends and her passing was quiet, dignified and peaceful.

Those of you who knew of Sam's illness know that her positive attitude shone throughout all of her treatment and that her determination filled everyone with the courage to share Sam's journey with her to this point. However, that journey was not as long or to have the happy final destination we all hoped that there would be.

You will all have special memories and thoughts of Sam, Sammy, Sammyla, Scoucer, Hursty or whatever you called her and those are the things that you need to hold on to over the coming days and weeks.

SAM HURST - OBITUARY

Sam was born in Crosby, Liverpool and started her hockey career with Southport Hockey Club. She went to college at MMU where she continued to play hockey and made many life long friends.

After graduating Sam moved to Stoke-on-Trent to teach at Abbey Hulton Primary School and joined North Stafford Hockey Club. Sam played for North Staffs for 18 years and captained the team on a number of occasions. Always the fittest and most passionate of players she loved to win for the team and had tremendous pride in the standard of her own game; one memorable occasion when this was exemplified was a National Cup game which North Staffs won and which gained a write up in the Daily Telegraph with Sam named as the outstanding player, the headline read “Hurst Hat-trick seals romp”! Also during her time at North Staffs she was appointed Head Teacher at Glebe Primary School, one of the youngest headship appointments in the County.

Sam’s passion for the game also meant a desire to play at the highest standard and in order to fulfil her ambition of playing National League hockey she joined Aldridge Hockey Club where she has played for the last 5 years. During this time she also represented her country, becoming a key member of the England Masters Over 40 squad

Both North Staffs and Aldridge paid tribute to Sam before Saturday’s games with a minute’s applause.

All her friends at North Staffs, Aldridge and across the Midlands will miss her fantastic sense of humour, generosity and passion.

Sam’s funeral will take place at 1pm on Monday 12th December at St Michael’s Church, Stone, Staffordshire. Please allow time to find parking. A donation will be taken for a chosen charity.

2012 OLYMPIC LEGACY

Stephen Barlow England Hockey Competitions and Events Manager is touring the regions with initiatives aimed at capitalising on the 2012 Olympics.

He will be in the Midlands on 29th February 7pm at Old Sils Hockey Club (M42 Junc 5).

There will be a presentation and he will be available to answer all your questions.

The Presentation Evening on 9th May at Old Sils, Knowle was a successful event held in a very positive atmosphere with everyone looking forward to the hockey at the Olympics and to the new season.

Congratulations to Stourport on their promotion to the National League and we wish them every success.

Welcome to the seven new teams to the feeder leagues, Beeston 3, Derby Asterdale 2, Harborne 2, Kettering 2, Loughborough Students 3, Uttoxeter and Warwick.

Sue Williams President MRHA presented trophies to the division winners and the top goal scorers. Barbara Jones awarded the Fair Play Trophies.
